Since my Mother grew up in Pacific Palisades, and my Grandmother still lives there, I am sure I have been invloved in this race more times than I can remember, but I the first time I officially participated in this race was in July of 2001 when I was almost 5 months pregnant with my first child. Despite being pregnant and having to stop to pee numerous times, I actually really enjoyed this race. It is pretty neat to run through the Palisades and check out all the huge and gorgeous homes. It is a local tradition to run the race and it was all very festive and fun! I even remember seeing Bob Saget from Full House and also Elaine from Seinfeld when I did this race. So, if you want to see some famous people and enjoy some 4th of July festivities, this race is right up your alley!
This is the first race I ever did in my whole life. The first time I did it was in 1979 (I think) as a little baby in a stroller. I don't remember that but I do remember doing it as a little kid, 5, 6 years old with the whole family then again in high school and college. I remember one time that bob Sagat was the MC and I took a picture with him and I couldn't get over how many freckles he had. One time I ran the race behind Elaine from Sienfeld and I was really surprised that she had lots of cellulite. Terrible, I know.
My mom's family is long time Pacific Palisades people, since like 1948 and I was born there, so this is definitely a home town race. If you are a true Palisadian this race is always a part of your 4th of July festivities. Race in the morning, hang out at the park after, hit the Palisades Parade in the afternoon, then go to someone's phat house for a BBQ then fireworks at Pali High. Oh I miss the Palisades.
If I were rich and didn't mind the LA people this would be my favorite place to live. Alas, I am not rich and I am not a LA people fan - although I have technically spent half my life there and was born there. What does this even have to do with the race? It doesn't. I'm done!
I did this race about 11 years ago with my wife. Wasn't much of a runner back then, not that I'm a runner now. It was my first 5K race. Simple race, very small rolling hills through the Palisades neighborhoods. It's a great 4th of July race. Low key, good post race venue, recommend giving it a try.
