Santa Cruz Sprint Triathlon
Santa Cruz, CA
Official Website : http://www.finishlineproduction.com
Date : August 9, 2009
Race Type : Triathlon and Multisport
Race Distance : 600 m swim, 12 mi bike, 3 mi run
Race Description: You'll swim 600- 700 yards at Cowell Beach adjacent to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, right next to the famous Steamer Lane surf area and the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Distance is dependent on the tide and where the buoys are placed each year.
After your swim you'll run down the sidewalk to Depot Park, have assistance getting your wetsuit off if you need it, and hop on your bike for a 12 mile ride out to the West Side of Santa Cruz. This year we have a new bike course that everyone should like much better than last year's course. You will only travel one way on Delaware Street, making a U-turn at the entrance to Long Marine Lab, then a right turn onto Swanton and a left turn onto West Cliff Drive for a very scenic ride back towards the corner of Bay and Laguna. This year you will make only TWO loops of this new course before returning to transition. The bonus for this course is that there will be less congestion and confusion on Delaware and the right lane heading down West Cliff will be closed to traffic so you'll have that return lane all to yourself. The left hand land of West Cliff will be open to local traffic so you will need to be alert and not cross the center line at any time.
At the end of your bike ride you'll return to Depot Park and run up West Cliff Drive past the Surfer Museum at Lighthouse Point before returning to the Depot Park Finish Line where you'll receive your medal and finisher's t-shirt.

What better spot to do a fast paced triathlon than Santa Cruz!!
If there is any pain it vanishes with the vistas from the flat and fast course. A quick swim next to the historic Santa Cruz Wharf starts off the morning. Run a block or so up to the bike transition for a fast and scenic loop course that is over before you know it!! Then back to the transition for a beautiful run above the bluffs of Cowell's Beach and Steamer Lane. You pass the Lighthouse twice and have a fast finish with a slight downhill that zooms you through the arch of balloons that welcome you. The race organizers are AWESOME! First or last, they are enthusiastic and supportive of every participant! I have done this with two of my kids and found it to be a great family event! I highly recommend making a weekend of racing and enjoying the eclectic Santa Cruz sights.
